Have you ever heard anyone mention scent work for senior dogs? Well I am pretty obsessed with it, and I hope I can convince you to be also!
As dogs get older, their needs start to change. This is something that’s not talked about enough in the dog behavior world in my opinion. So here I am, talking about it!
Even as early as age 6+ (depending on the individual dog), many dogs begin to experience shifts. Maybe they’re a little slower to get up, a little more sensitive to change, or a little less interested in things that used to excite them.
And while physical or medical changes tend to get the most attention, behavior changes are just as common and just as important to support.
We may start to see:
-
Increased anxiety (not sure what that looks like? Read my full breakdown on signs of anxiety in dogs here.)
-
Signs of cognitive decline (aka dementia in dogs)
-
Changes in social preferences around people or other animals
Here’s the part most people miss:
There are things we can do to support our dogs through these changes and even get ahead of them.
One of the most effective (and underrated) tools?
Scent work for senior dogs.¸
Whether your dog is just starting to get older or already in their senior years, scent work is a simple, powerful way to support their brain, confidence, and overall well-being.
1. Scent Work Exercises Your Dog’s Brain
Mental stimulation is absolutely essential for your dog’s well-being as they get older.
Just like humans, senior dogs benefit from activities that keep their brains active and engaged. Scent work does exactly that by giving your dog a problem to solve using their nose.
That kind of problem-solving helps keep the brain engaged and functioning well. Research suggests that cognitive decline can affect up to 30% of aging dogs, which makes proactive mental enrichment even more important.
And here’s where many people get it backwards:
As physical exercise often becomes shorter, slower, and less intense with age, mental enrichment should increase.
Scent work is one of the easiest ways to do that. It provides meaningful, satisfying mental exercise without putting additional strain on your dog’s body.
2. Scent Work Builds Confidence and Reduces Anxiety
Senior dogs are more prone to experiencing increased anxiety and stress.
Changes in vision, hearing, and predictability can make the world feel less safe. Dogs who were once easygoing may start to struggle with things like:
-
Guests in the home
-
New environments
- Changes in routine
-
Being left alone
- Interactions with other pets
(If this sounds familiar, you’ll want to read this prior blog to learn more.)
Scent work helps because it gives dogs agency and choice, AKA something they can control.
When dogs are searching, they:
-
Move at their own pace
-
Make their own choices
-
Solve the puzzle themselves
This helps reduce stress and build confidence!
3. It’s Low Impact and Accessible
As dogs age, physical exercise often needs to change. Long walks, intense play, or high-energy training sessions might not feel good to them anymore.
But they still need enrichment, just in a different form.
Scent work is:
-
Low impact
-
At your dog’s pace
-
Easy to do indoors or outdoors
-
Accessible for dogs with mobility challenges or pain
-
Ideal for dogs who can’t travel, struggle in new environments, or don’t do well around unfamiliar people or other dogs
This is a big one.
Not every dog benefits from getting out more. For some dogs, especially anxious, reactive, or aging dogs—the safest and most effective place to learn and engage is at home.
Scent work allows you to meet your senior dog exactly where they are, without adding stress.
Why It Matters
Dogs experience the world through their noses.
When we give them opportunities to sniff, search, and explore, we’re meeting their needs and maintaining their brain strength, which is especially important as they age.
Scent work can:
-
Provide daily mental enrichment
-
Reduce anxiety
-
Support cognitive function
-
Improve overall quality of life
That’s exactly why I created Let Them Sniff, a practical, step-by-step, fun course made to help you incorporate scent work into your dog’s daily life.
Let Them Sniff teaches you and your dog how to work together to unleash the amazing power of your dog’s strongest sense!
